INDIGO DYEING EXPERIENCE
Indigo has been a cornerstone of South Carolina’s history since its introduction to the colony in 1744. By the 18th century, indigo had become the state’s second most valuable export, trailing only rice. The rich blue dye derived from the indigo plant was highly prized by the British textile industry. Just before the American Revolution, American growers were exporting over a million pounds of indigo to England. This thriving industry relied on the labor of thousands of workers. Today, the legacy of indigo is preserved in the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage of the region. As part of this event, guests will have the chance to create and take home their own indigo-dyed piece.

The event will be held in the private garden of Louisa Pringle Cameron, renowned for its enchanting courtyard gardens in Charleston's historic district. Louisa Pringle Cameron’s Garden is a celebrated example of Charleston’s horticultural beauty. Louisa shares the splendor of her gardens alongside stories from garden owners, urban foresters, city horticulturists, and other stewards of Charleston's verdant spaces.
